It sounds cliché to say I want to change the world. After all, I am not running for Miss America or anything. The thought of changing the world may be overwhelming since it is not a one person job. Are we than excused from doing our part? No, we each have a part and no, it is not the governments’ job to change the world. If it is, they are failing miserably. It is the church’s job to take care of the poor, needy, orphans, widows and one another.
21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
The point of this scripture is not that everyone has to sell all their possessions and give it to the poor. This man thought he was religious by keeping the laws and said he was ready to follow Christ. Jesus knew the truth; his heart belonged to his money first and foremost. God will not be second to any other gods, especially money. Our money is not our own. It is God’s money, entrusted to us for a purpose greater than ourselves. The reason 20,000 children are dying every day from starvation and preventable disease is simple; Greed and selfishness. Millions of children have been sold into prostitution and other forms of human trafficking because their families are so desperate to provide for the rest of their family. There is enough money to go around but greed is powerful. Selfishness makes us focus on ourselves rather than others.
That is where we step in. We need to make sacrifices, and take a stand in order to make a difference. Whether it involves sacrificing our time, possessions or luxuries (like pedicures, hair appointments, many pairs of shoes, a less expensive car or maybe your cable T.V.) Jesus laid down his life for you. What luxury are you willing to lay down for the life of a child?
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
I am telling you that you can change the world one child at a time. For about $1.20 a day you can provide food, clean water, education, protection and help improve their community. You may be able to sponsor 2, 3 or 4 children. God doesn’t give us more so we can have more. He gives us more so we can take care of those in need. These children are in desperate need.
